Lombok island
Lombok is a paradise island of Indonesia lies in the east of Bali or
located at central Indonesian territory, devoted its magnificent stunning
views which worth beyond imagination to explore its wilderness excellent
nature put forth before you is where you will redeem your adventurous
spirit of trekking up to Mt. Rinjani into yearning of tranquilities and
feeling the balmy weather spilling through the enormous small Gili islands
- beaches surrounded the main island of Lombok.
The name 'Lombok' could have been derived from that of a hot red chill
pepper, but this is probably a folk etymology. The Sasak name their island
Bumi Gora, 'the dry agricultural soil', or Selaparang, to an old
principality in East-Lombok. With its shape, Lombok looks a little bit
like a lumbung, a traditional rice shed, and measures about 80 km from
north to south, and seventy km from west to east. A big peninsula in the
southwest stretches to the west, in the southeast is another, smaller,
peninsula. Off the coast are groups of small islands, which are names 'Gili',
the Sasak word of island. Some of them are inhabited by fishermen and some
cattle, the most known - Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan, off the
northwestern coast - are home to masses young, mainly European tourists,
especially in the months July, August and September.
Heading to the north east of the main island of Lombok, you will stumble
with an imposing volcano called Rinjani soaring up its mighty summit of
3,726 M above sea level and it is the second highest mountain in
Indonesia. Everyday, every week, every month or every year, countless of
travelers from all over the world have probed its impressive pinnacle to
feel the glorious elation of conquering the summit.
Hoping to eastern island that is Sumbawa is part of volcanic northern
chain of Nusa Tenggara and while activity took place over the eras, no
single explosion seems to have been as dramatic as Mt. Tambora eruption of
1815.
Proceeding up to the east again, we will arrive at Komodo island and
neighboring Rinca are between Sumbawa and Flores, approximately 500
kilometers east of Bali. The shape of the island is very irregular. The
Komodo dragon are found only on the islands of Komodo, Padar and rinca,
and some parts of western Flores. Locally called Ora, the dragons are most
numerous on Komodo, which together with nearby Rinca has been set aside as
National Park. There are many walks along designated trails and always
accompanied by a ranger through dragons territory. The views of emerald
blue seas and coral reef off Komodo, especially from Mt. Ara are
incredible. The snorkeling and swimming around Pantai Merah Red Beach
east of Loh Liang and Pulau Lasa, and island near Komodo village, are
superb.
